Overview

Langtang Gosaikunda Trek is an interesting journey that takes you 140 kilometers north of Kathmandu valley to experience an awesome mix of Tibetan culture with astonishing mountain views. Langtang Gosaikunda is probably one of the most accessible treks in Nepal that combines remote valley, high mountains, glaciers and glacial lakes with traditional Tamang villages, their culture and Buddhism religion. The trail traverses through Langtang National Park which is a protected area that treasures different species of floras, faunas, birds, mammals, and butterflies. It exhibits a high diversity with 14 vegetation types in 18 different ecosystem types. The ecosystem ranges from tropical forests below 1000 meters to alpine shrubs, meadows to perennial ice in the mountainous region.

The wilderness of Langtang valley
Langtang Gosaikunda Trek starts with an awesome drive to Syabrubensi from where we take a path that passes some tropical forests and vibrant villages on the way to Langtang valley. Langtang valley is a magical place to be at. The dry and wild terrain in the shadows of beautiful Himalayas makes this place even more appealing. As you traverse deep into the valley, we can feel the strong dominance of the Tibetan Buddist religion. The prayer flags, mani walls, stupas and gompas on the trail gives us a spiritual vibe that adds to the glory of this valley. The valley consists of some local Tamang villages, cheese factory, and Kyanjin gompa. Kyanjin Gompa is an ancient gompa and spiritual hub of the entire region. Langtang Gosaikunda provides an opportunity to visit the gompas. Besides, we can also visit a local cheese factory in the village. Here, we can taste the pure yak cheese and purchase some as a souvenir back to your home town. Kyanjin Ri in Langtang valley is considered to be one of the best locations in the region to relish the striking views of mountains in the Langtang range.

Tantalizing beauty of Gosaikunda Lake - a religious myth!
Next on the route after Langtang valley is Gosaikundo Lake. Situated at an elevation of 4360 meters, Gosaikunda lake is a peaceful place to be at. The serene and clear water of the lake amidst the towering mountains on all sides makes us feel as if we could be there a little longer to behold the wonderful memories forever. Gosaikunda Lake is not just popular for its natural splendor but for the religious value that it beholds. As per Hindu mythology, in the ancient era, gods and Demons were engaged in “Samundra Manthan” to produce elixir (a medicine for immortality). During the process, the poison was formed as a byproduct that could destroy the entire world. Hence, Lord Shiva drank the poison himself to save the world from the poison. After swallowing the poison, Lord Shiva couldn’t bear the burning sensation hence stuck his trident in the mountain to extract water and quench the thirst. In this way, the lake was formed as mentioned in the religious books of Hindu. It is believed that a holy dip into the lake is a remedy to get rid of all the sins created during a lifetime. Hence, thousands of Hindu pilgrims visit this place annually.

Traditional people and their traditional lifestyle
Langtang region is mostly inhabited by Tamang and Sherpa people of Tibetan origin. Everything from facial features, culture, religion, lifestyle, languages, and dresses to the structures of villages resembles that of the Tibetan people and Tibetan villages. The people residing in this area are very traditional. They are engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry for their livelihood. The people in this area are very skillful. They have inherited the craftsmanship from their ancestors. They are very good at wooden carving and bamboo works. One can notice it in the artistic windows and wooden works on the villages that we pass by during the Langtang Gosaikunda.
